Man Utd 4-0 Everton: Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee on target as Ruben Amorim gets first Premier League win
Report and free match highlights from Sunday's match between Man Utd and Everton at Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim gets his first Premier League win as head coach; Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee scored doubles to extend Everton's winless run
Sunday 1 December 2024 16:40, UK
Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee scored twice each as Manchester United thrashed Everton 4-0 in Ruben Amorim's first Premier League home game in charge.
Having been held to a 1-1 draw by Ipswich in Amorim's bow last weekend, Manchester United were transformed as Rashford's low strike bounced in off Jarrad Branthwaite for a 34th-minute opener after he was picked out by Bruno Fernandes at a corner.
Zirkzee, selected up front for his first Premier League start since September, doubled their lead seven minutes later with a close-range finish from another Fernandes assist after Branthwaite had lost possession in Everton territory.
The visitors had started brightly, with Beto spurning a couple of early opportunities, but their collapse continued only 20 seconds after half-time, when more sloppiness allowed the excellent Amad Diallo to play in Rashford for a well-taken second.

Amad pounced on more slack work from Everton to set up Zirkzee for the fourth, stealing the ball off the toes of James Tarkowski, then charging forward and laying it across to his team-mate, who finished coolly to spark more Old Trafford celebrations.

Zirkzee's second capped a ruthless showing from Manchester United, who netted their four goals from only five shots on target, the handsome victory moving them up to ninth in the Premier League table and intensifying the woes of their opponents.
Everton are now without a win in five Premier League games, and without a goal in four. Their latest defeat keeps them only two points above the relegation zone in 15th place.
For Amorim and his side, though, it was an overwhelmingly positive afternoon to follow Thursday's Europa League win over Bodo/Glimt, and a performance to give the new era lift-off ahead of their trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Wednesday.
Rashford: I feel energised
Man Utd's Marcus Rashford to Sky Sports:
"Nice result. We have to back this performance up and hopefully win in the week.
"The aim for us all is to get back to our best. And even when you are at your best, you have to push and improve.
"The manager has come in at a very busy period but hopefully we can keep growing the connection and it keeps getting stronger. He has come in with a great attitude and that's passed on to the players. We are happy.
"Playing at this historic stadium is always an amazing feeling. We want to find consistency in the way we play, and our results, and that is the main focus. It's still early but I feel energised and ready for the next game."
Amorim: We have more work to do
Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim to Sky Sports:
"The result was good but we were pragmatic. I don't think it was pretty but we did our job, which is to win. We can still adapt and have a long way to go.
"In the right moments, we had the goals and that changed the game. We don't just focus on the result.
"We have so much to do but it is better to work with victories. Let's focus on the performance more.
"It was not a straight line of a top performance, it was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. We had some moments when we were good, and some other moments when he had to suffer."
Analysis: Rashford looks transformed
Sky Sports' Nick Wright:
The early signs of Manchester United's transformation under Amorim are most apparent in Rashford. The 27-year-old had not scored in seven Premier League appearances before the arrival of the new head coach. He now has three in two.
His low shot for his opener on Sunday was bound for the bottom corner before it cannoned in off Branthwaite. For his second, he accelerated onto Amad's pass and dispatched a clinical finish through the legs of the advancing Jordan Pickford.
He looked like a player whose confidence has been restored and he sounded like one too. "It's still early but I feel energised and ready for the next game," he told Sky Sports afterwards. Amorim, he added, has brought a "great attitude" which has rubbed off on the players.
He was not the only attacker who enjoyed himself at Old Trafford. Zirkzee vindicated his selection with a two-goal display of his own which also featured some eye-catching link play in midfield areas. Amad and Fernandes provided two assists each.
But Rashford's return to form feels like the biggest positive for the new man in charge. On this kind of form, he can hurt any opponent. Amorim will hope for more of the same against Arsenal.
Dyche: Too many mistakes
Everton boss Sean Dyche to Sky Sports:
"Too many mistakes again. For the first 32 minutes, we looked a good and progressive outfit but didn't have the finish. But then one mistake leads to another and before you know it you are 2-0 down.
"The third one after kick-off is the biggest gripe for me. I don't know where they are going. It goes to show, if you don't stay tuned in all the time, it doesn't work for you.
"It's very difficult when there are such glaring individual mistakes. It makes it a very difficult task.
"We have to get back on track quickly. The mentality has to click quickly. That's the next challenge. We have to change it straight away by reacting in the next game."
Analysis: A backward step for Everton
Sky Sports' Patrick Rowe:
The Toffees started the fixture well but capitulated after Rashford's opening goal deflected off Branthwaite.
Back-to-back clean sheets in their two fixtures prior to this outing quickly felt like a distant memory.
When it goes wrong for Everton, it goes incredibly wrong. Three goals in the space of 12 minutes put this game out of reach and they looked reminiscent of the side that shipped four to Tottenham and three to Brighton.
Everton thought they had addressed their problems in defence but have now seemingly taken one step forward and two steps back.
The loss also makes it four games without a goal, which will only heighten the discontent among the fanbase.
