Russia strengthened their grip on second place in Group Four with a 1-0 win over lowly Liechtenstein.

Midfielder's first-half strike gives Hiddink's side crucial win

Russia strengthened their grip on second place in World Cup qualifying Group Four with a 1-0 win over lowly Liechtenstein on Wednesday. Midfielder Konstantin Zyryanov scored the only goal after 38 minutes but Russia failed to finish off their hard-working opponents despite dominating possession. Guus Hiddink, who is currently the interim Chelsea manager, saw his Euro 2008 semi-finalists begin the night four points behind Germany with a game in hand and it remained that way after the group leaders beat Wales 2-0. Bottom-placed Liechtenstein are yet to score a goal in the group, their only point coming from a 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan.
