Yossi Benayoun fired a hat-trick as Israel beat Malta 3-1 their opening Euro 2012 qualifying match.

Skipper's hat-trick gives Israel ideal start to qualifying

Yossi Benayoun fired a hat-trick for Israel as they opened their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 win over Malta. The Chelsea winger ran riot at the Ramat-Gan Stadium to ensure Luis Fernandez's side started their Group F quest with a three-point haul. Captain Benayoun gave the hosts the lead in the seventh minute with a low shot from close range and struck again in the 64th minute via the penalty spot before sealing victory with a header 15 minutes from time. Malta went into the break level after Jamie Pace's 38th minute strike but the visitors found the hosts too aggressive and skilful throughout the match. The other opening Group F fixtures will be played on Friday when Latvia host Croatia and Greece are at home to Georgia.
