Iceland 1-1 Hungary: Late Birkir Saevarsson own goal ensures spoils shared in Group F

​Birkir Saevarsson scored a late own goal as Hungary nicked a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iceland to leave them on the verge of progressing from Group F at Euro 2016.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's first-half penalty looked like it was going to be enough for Iceland to secure a first-ever major tournament victory, but Hungary hit back two minutes from time to stay unbeaten in France,

The result leaves the Hungarians leading the way in Group F on four points, a total likely to be enough to qualify for the last-16.

Iceland, who defended stoutly for so long, move onto two points and will now probably need a result in their final group game against Austria to have a chance of making it through to the knockout stages. 

Hungary dominated possession and territory throughout most of the first half, but it was Iceland who managed to carve out the best chances of the opening 45 minutes.

After 31 minutes Johan Gudmundsson was presented with a glorious opportunity as he brushed off Tamas Kadar in the box, but he could only hit his effort straight at the onrushing Gabor Kiraly.

The goalkeeper, however, would make the mistake eight minutes later that led to Iceland's opener as he spilled a corner right into the heart of his own penalty area, forcing Kadar to bring down Aron Gunnarsson - who perhaps went down a little easily - as the Hungary defence attempted to recover the situation.

It was left to Swansea man Sigurdsson to step up to the spot, and he made no mistake in putting Iceland ahead, sending the 40-year-old Kiraly the wrong way as he tucked it into the bottom corner. 

The second half began largely in the same pattern as the first, with Hungary dominating but creating very few chances, and Iceland more than happy to sit deep and defend. 

Hungary's frustrated boss Bernd Storck made some changes midway through the half in an attempt to inject some extra energy into his team, and it was one of those substitutions, Nemanja Nikolic, who finally made the difference for his side.

With just over two minutes left on the clock Nikolic surged down the right before cutting the ball back across the six-yard line, and Saevarsson, sliding in, could do little but turn it into his own net.

Iceland then had a glorious chance to win the game with the last kick of the game as they won a free-kick right on the edge of Hungary's box, but substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen saw his shot deflected wide after Sigurdsson's effort had hit the wall. The final whistle then blew to send the Hungarian players and fans into raptures.
