Hull 1-1 Newcastle (3-1 after penalties): Dieumerci Mbokani sent off but Hull reach EFL Cup semis

Hull overcame the dismissal of Dieumerci Mbokani to beat Newcastle 3-1 on penalties and reach the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time.

The hosts looked to be up against it when Mbokani was sent off in the 89th minute with the game still goalless for pushing his head towards Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Newcastle took advantage in extra-time as Mohamed Diame prodded home in the 98th minute against his former side.

But Robert Snodgrass replied just 77 seconds later and Hull were far more clinical in the shoot-out.

Jonjo Shelvey saw his spot-kick saved before Dwight Gayle fired against the bar, and then Eldin Jakupovic saved from Yoan Gouffran to book Hull's place in the last four.

While defeat means Newcastle can now focus on winning promotion from the Championship, Rafa Benitez may feel it was an opportunity missed against opposition struggling for form in the Premier League.

Both sides made a number of changes from their league matches at the weekend, with Achraf Lazaar and goalkeeper Matz Sels among those starting for Newcastle while Tom Huddlestone, David Meyler and Adama Diomande were recalled by Hull.

After a cagey start, it was Newcastle who started to take control of the contest and assert their authority.

Dwight Gayle hit a shot from the edge of the box that Jakupovic turned away before Diame shot wide against the side he left in the summer.

Snodgrass fired off target in a rare attempt for the hosts in the 23rd minute.

Otherwise it was the Magpies who dominated the first half, with Diame heading over from eight yards out and Matt Ritchie shooting just over the top from a well-worked corner routine.

Isaac Hayden, who spent last season on loan at Hull, then fired wide after a strong tackle in midfield.

Hull, though, improved after the break and looked to be finishing the game better until Mbokani was sent off late on for pushing his head towards Lascelles after an altercation on the touchline.

With the numerical advantage, Newcastle regained control in extra-time and went close as Ciaran Clark's shot was saved and then Lazaar fired against the bar.

Moments later the breakthrough arrived as a corner was played short and flicked on by Dwight Gayle for Diame to turn home.

While Diame did not celebrate, the celebrations of the Newcastle fans were quickly cut short by Hull's equaliser just over a minute later.

Sels could only palm out a shot from substitute Markus Henriksen and Snodgrass reacted quickest to turn in the rebound.

Newcastle created chances to regain the lead; Hayden seeing an attempt blocked, Gayle having a header sharply saved and then firing over the bar.

But Hull also went close as Henriksen blazed over from a good position and then Snodgrass failed to get a shot off after being played through on goal.

The hosts, though, were more clinical in the shoot-out, with Snodgrass, Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone all scoring to secure a last-four spot.
