A close-range strike from Delroy Facey brought Notts County three much-needed points at Grimsby.
The frontman converted a cross from Myles Weston in the 37th minute in a game in which he could have had a hat-trick.
But it was Grimsby who should have gone ahead after 19 minutes when Adam Proudlock met a cross from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro with a firm header which beat goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington but was cleared from in front of the line by Mitch Hanson.
Facey missed a great opportunity minutes later when he blazed over from six yards and then Sean Canham brought a fine save from Phil Barnes with a left-foot shot.
But Facey made up for his miss by putting County ahead. All the work was done by Weston with a surging run down the left and a cross which picked out Facey who tapped home from a couple of yards out.
In a rare Grimsby attack after the break, Proudlock saw a left-footed shot turned around the post by Pilkington.
Facey should have added to his total after breaking clear but his shot cannoned back off the legs of Barnes.
