Fleetwood 1-3 Wigan: Latics maintain promotion push
Monday 28 December 2015 23:01, UK
Wigan kept their promotion push alive with a 3-1 win at struggling Fleetwood.
Fleetwood started the brighter and might have been ahead before the half hour when Nick Haughton's curling corner was tipped clear by experienced goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
But Latics gradually grew into the game and grabbed the lead five minutes before the break. Andy Kellett broke down the right, darted past a soft Amari'i Bell challenge and drove the ball in low to the near post.
The contact was not clean and Chris Maxwell got a hand to it but the Fleetwood goalkeeper was unable to stop the ball from sliding under his body and into the net.
Wigan should have extended their lead after the break, twice rattling the woodwork, first through Donervan Daniels and then Max Power, whose red-hot free-kick had Maxwell beaten.

But it was Fleetwood who struck the next blow when David Ball was bundled over by Daniels just inside the box and Antoni Sarcevic smashed the penalty past Jaaskelainen to level matters.
It certainly was not over, with substitute Ash Hunter forcing a fine save from Jaaskelainen and forcing Gary Caldwell to shuffle his pack.
The two Latics subs combined for the winner, Yanic Wildshut's shot saved and Jordy Hiwula stroking home the rebound from six yards.
Michael Jacobs sealed it, getting on the end of a late breakaway and smashing past Maxwell to sink hopes of a late home comeback.
