Jamille Matt left it late to salvage a point for Fleetwood but Chris Maxwell was the real hero as his late penalty save secured them a 1-1 draw with Rochdale.
The first half was a real stalemate as Jimmy Ryan went closest for Fleetwood, creating space and firing into the side netting from the edge of the box.
The second half started at a higher tempo, Amari'i Bell muscling his way into the box only to have his cross blocked.
It was Fleetwood doing all the work but Dale who grabbed the lead as Peter Vincenti was left unmarked at the back post to head home from close range.
Jamie Proctor led a Fleetwood fightback - his close range effort coming back off the woodwork.
Graham Alexander threw on three attacking substitutes as Town chased an equaliser Matt nearly provided, Josh Lillis coming to the rescue to tip his looping header over the bar.
But Dale could not hold out much longer, Matt rising at the back post to nod home a Bobby Grant corner - a just reward for sustained pressure.
There was almost a late twist, Vincenti tumbling inside the box under the challenge of Eggert Jonsson but Maxwell salvaged a point for the hosts with a superb low save to deny Ian Henderson.
