Shrews snatch late win on South Coast
Shrewsbury captain Ben Davies struck a dramatic 90th-minute winner as his side progressed to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-1 win at Exeter.
Despite a promising start, in which Adam Stansfield twice missed good chances to put Exeter in front, the Grecians fell behind when a quick Shrewsbury counter ended with Michael Symes teeing up Kevin McIntyre, who rolled the ball into the corner from 15 yards.
However, Exeter responded with the equaliser 13 minutes later when a Ben Watson cross came back off the upright and from a narrow angle, Ryan Harley drilled a fine left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
The Grecians, who were beaten 1-0 by the Shrews in the league earlier this season, continued to create the better chances and dominate possession, but they could not find a way through the visitors' resolute backline.
And once again, Exeter's profligacy was costly as Davies capitalised on a poor punch by home goalkeeper Paul Jones in the last minute to complete an unlikely win.
