Dominic Solanke came off the bench to head a late winner as England Under-21s moved a step closer to Euro 2019 qualification with a 2-1 victory over Ukraine.

It looked like the Young Lions would have to settle for a draw when Mykola Shaparenko cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's first-half strike with seven minutes to go at Bramall Lane, but Liverpool forward Solanke nodded the winner with two minutes to go.

The result means England stay five points clear at the top of their qualifying group with four games left to play.

Team news

Ryan Sessegnon made his first start for England Under-21s, while Norwich pair James Maddison and Angus Gunn were among the starters.

Much of the pre-match attention was on Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon, who was making his debut for the Under-21s, but it was the former Sheffield United youngster Calvert-Lewin who netted the opener at the home of the Blades.

It took until 41 minutes for the goal to come, but it was worth the wait from England as James Maddison picked up the ball on the right and fizzed a delightful low pass right in behind the Ukraine defence for Calvert-Lewin to run onto, who controlled the ball with his first touch on the edge of the area before using his second to poke the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Ukraine improved after the break and should have levelled after 64 minutes as Maksym Lunov's shot beat Angus Gunn, but Jonjoe Kenny got back onto his line brilliantly to head the ball clear.

It looked as though England would pay for that miss when Ukraine substitute Shaparenko equalised with a header after 83 minutes, but the Young Lions managed to nick the win thanks to a replacement of their own as Solanke found himself unmarked in the box to head home Ben Chilwell's cross with two minutes to go.

Man of the match: James Maddison

The standout player for England during his 77 minutes on the pitch. He caused problems for Ukraine's defence all evening and provided the real moment of quality of the game as he found Calvert-Lewin for England's opener.
