Dagenham and Redbridge 1-1 Whitehawk: Non-league side earn FA Cup replay

Substitute Jordan Rose headed an injury-time equaliser to prolong Whitehawk's FA Cup adventure with a 1-1 draw at Dagenham.

The National League South side from Brighton's bid to reach the third round of the world's oldest cup competition looked set to be thwarted by the League's oldest outfield player, with the Daggers hanging on to 40-year-old Jamie Cureton's early strike.

But with the Hawks charging at the hosts' goal, centre-half Rose got his head onto Sam Deering's cross to secure a 1-1 draw and a replay.

Dagenham, historically a side more used to playing the role of underdogs, certainly looked susceptible to being on the wrong end an upset, lying a point off the League Two relegation zone and without a home win all season.

The Hawks had also brought with them plenty of Football League experience, not least in the shape of defender Dean Leacock, who played in the Premier League with Derby.

Whitehawk have applied to become known as Brighton and Hove City, but were turned down by the FA having met opposition from the Championship club with virtually the same name.

They have made a name for themselves in the cup this season, though, and brought plenty of colour to the occasion at Victoria Road - the team wore bright pink away shirts and their 200-odd noisy travelling fans, the 'Ultras', displayed rainbow flags with anti-homophobia messages.

They created plenty of chances, too, with Leacock thumping a header against the crossbar and Arnaud Mendy bundling home the rebound, only to be denied by a linesman's flag, just before half-time.

By that stage they had already fallen behind to Dagenham's first attack of the game, though, having failed to clear Andre Boucaud's corner.

As the ball came back into the area Cureton, with 282 career goals already behind him, swivelled before blasting low past Hawks goalkeeper Craig Ross to add another to his collection.

It was almost two moments later when Joss Labadie thumped a 25-yard free-kick towards goal but Ross managed to tip it over the crossbar.

Yet the Hawks dominated after the break, with striker Danny Mills chasing a long ball over the top only to slice his shot too high.

Mendy volleyed Dave Martin's cross narrowly wide and Jake Robinson fired over, before Deering's drive forced a fine save from Mark Cousins.

But, in the fourth minute of injury time, Deering lifted the ball into the box once more and Rose rose highest to ensure Whitehawk remain in with a shout of reaching of the third round.
