On-loan forward nets only goal of game against Charlton

Crystal Palace rose out of the Championship relegation places as Neil Warnock's side defeated South London rivals Charlton Athletic 1-0 at Selhurst Park. On-loan striker Craig Beattie netted the only goal of the game on 63 minutes as the home side ended a run of three games without a win and Charlton suffered their second straight league loss. A pumped-up Paddy McCarthy, who joined Palace from Charlton over the summer with fellow defender Mark Hudson going in the other direction, set the tone by letting his old team-mate Luke Varney know he was in for a tough night with a couple of crunching tackles early on. Charlton, who withstood five corners in the first four minutes, eventually began warming to their task but their forays forward failed to trouble Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni. Hameur Bouazza's crossing was wayward, while on the opposite wing Lloyd Sam was well looked after by Clint Hill.

Desperate

With the first half in a desperate lull, it took teenager Victor Moses to raise the tempo with a strong run and shot which flew narrowly wide of Weaver's post. Moments later, Paul Ifill spurned a great chance, latching onto Danny Butterfield's clever cut-back and firing across Weaver, who palmed the ball wide. From the resulting corner, Beattie met Watson's cross only for Weaver to fingertip his header onto the crossbar. Seconds after the break, Charlton had another let-off when Nick Carle burst clear of Hudson and prodded the ball goalwards. Weaver saved his shot and the ball fell at the feet of Ifill, who skewed it wide with the keeper grounded and the goal gaping.

Deft

The winger almost made amends moments later when he cleverly dragged Hill's cross from behind him only to shoot inches wide on the turn. But in the 63rd minute Palace finally broke the deadlock when Watson swung in a long, curling cross which Beattie, jumping above Linvoy Primus, met with a perfect cushioned header back past Weaver. Pardew threw on attackers Andy Gray, Svetoslav Todorov and Zheng Zhi but it was Palace who almost scored again, Jose Fonte heading another cross from Watson against the crossbar.
