Crewe 1-2 Exeter: Grecians move into play-offs
Saturday 23 February 2019 20:12, UK
Goals from Jake Taylor and Matt Jay pushed Exeter into the play-off berths as they ended Crewe's seven-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 success at Gresty Road.
Exeter were given an early boost when Taylor collected a half-cleared corner and drove in with the aid of a deflection in the seventh minute.
The Grecians looked slicker on the ball and came close to doubling their lead when Randall Williams saw his finish blocked by Crewe keeper Ben Garratt at the far post.
Ryan Bowman whistled an effort wide, while Crewe were kept in check, no more so than when Dara O'Shea conjured a last-ditch tackle after Charlie Kirk wriggled free inside the box.
Yet Exeter were almost caught napping on the stroke of half-time when Paul Green headed onto the roof of the net.

Williams was close to restoring Exeter's advantage soon when he volleyed onto the far post.
Bowman, too, might have done better with a half chance he shot straight at Garratt. But homegrown youngster Jay's radar was spot on when he made room on the edge of the box to place a left-footed finish across Garratt into the far corner in the 66th minute.
