Portsmouth ended a run of five straight away defeats in all competitions with a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham on Saturday.
Omari Sterling-James celebrated the signing of his new contract in midweek with the first goal of his Football League career, putting Cheltenham ahead in the 42nd minute, but it was cancelled out by Nigel Atangana in the second period. Danny Hollands had fired an acrobatic volley from Lee Holmes' cross into the side netting for Portsmouth in the 10th minute. However, the hosts led when Sterling-Jones received the ball from Craig Braham-Barrett just outside the box before a neat step-over gave him the space to unleash a low left-footed finish past Paul Jones. Pompey made a strong start to the second half, but Sterling-James should have scored a second in the 55th minute after an error from Joe Devera. He raced through on goal, yet Jones saved his effort and seconds later the visitors were level. Jack Whatmough made a strong run forward before supplying Atangana and his powerful drive crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. Paul Robinson shot wide from a good position with a minute left and Trevor Carson saved from Holmes as Portsmouth nearly found a winner.
