Celtic 4-1 St Johnstone: Hoops title celebrations continue

Celtic continued their Scottish Premiership title celebrations with an impressive 4-1 over St Johnstone on Saturday.

Three goals in five minutes saw Celtic's Patrick Roberts open the scoring early into the second half before Steven MacLean equalised for the visitors two minutes later, only for the Hoops to reinstate their lead in the 52nd minute through Dedryck Boyata.

A third followed for the hosts when Roberts netted his second of the day shortly after the hour mark before Callum McGregor made it four to continue his fine goal-scoring form for the league winners, who are aiming to break their record points tally of 103 before the campaign draws to a close.

Brendan Rodgers' men continued to dominate proceedings and were denied a fifth by some smart Saints' defending in the dying minutes as they made it 43 domestic matches unbeaten this season.

In a goalless first half, which saw little in the way of chances created, the home side slowly tightened their grip on the game when Tom Rogic released a left-footed drive from distance to produce a smart save from goalkeeper Zander Clark.

But goals rained in after the interval when Roberts, whose double reiterated his willingness to miss England's Under-20s World Cup campaign to remain at Celtic Park for the Scottish Cup final, put his side ahead with a stunning shot from 25 yards in the 47th minute.

The lead didn't last long though, as Saints drew level when MacLean forced home the rebound after goalkeeper Craig Gordon had kept out Graham Cummins' header from close-range.

Boyata restored the lead for the hosts when he rose highest to head in an inviting Leigh Griffiths' corner.

And the goals kept coming as Roberts, on loan from Manchester City, extended Celtic's advantage after 62 minutes when he met Scott Sinclair's ball into the box to net from close range.

Substitute McGregor made his introduction felt just moments after replacing Rogic when, after some neat build-up play, he shimmied into the box to fire in a fourth for the Hoops and make it three goals from his last three games.
