League Two Cambridge made light of the 28-team gap between them and Fleetwood on the football ladder to upset their 10-man visitors 1-0.
A dour game sparked into life 18 minutes from time as the visitors were reduced to 10 men. Jamie Proctor, who had only come on as a substitute 11 minutes beforehand, was given a straight red card for raising his hands at Richard Tait amidst a scuffle. The U's capitalised on their numerical advantage eight minutes later when Robbie Simpson led a five-on-three break and fed the ball left for Kwesi Appiah to fire past former Cambridge loanee Chris Maxwell. Despite being a man light, Fleetwood almost equalised six minutes from the end when Jeff Hughes' cross was met by a powerful Tom Hitchcock header, only for goalkeeper Chris Dunn to deny him with a fine reflex stop. Fleetwood have now lost seven away games in a row in all competitions and have failed to reach the second round for the first time in four years.
