Bristol City 1-2 Hull: Harry Maguire and Michael Dawson head Tigers through
Tuesday 25 October 2016 22:54, UK
Harry Maguire and Michael Dawson scored headers either side of half-time to send Hull through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup as they beat Bristol City 2-1 at Ashton Gate.
After two corners in quick succession in Tuesday night's fourth-round tie, it was the second from Ryan Mason which found the head of Maguire, who was lurking at the back post, and he stooped to head beyond Richard O'Donnell two minutes before the break.
The second half had barely got underway when Dawson - who has had a terrible time with injuries - rose highest to power in Hull's second goal from another Mason corner.
Lee Tomlin added a late goal with a fabulous low strike for Bristol City into the bottom corner and Curtis Davies was forced to clear off the line at the death as Hull made it over the finish line.
The win is Hull's first in four games and represents a much-needed boost for Mike Phelan's men, who advance to the next round of the competition for only the second time in their history, following last season's quarter-final defeat at eventual winners Manchester City.

Fresh off the back of a 1-0 win over Blackburn at the weekend, it was Bristol City who began more confidently and Sweden international Gustav Engvall rose above Davies, but his header was off target.
Abel Hernandez was lively for Hull in the early stages and had a great chance when his rasping drive from 30 yards out dipped and swerved before bouncing off the crossbar.
The win is Hull's first in four games and a much needed boost for Mike Phelan's men, who advance to the next round of the competition for only the second time in their history, something they achieved last season.
The news before kick-off that Robert Snodgrass would be sidelined for at least four weeks was a huge blow and Hull looked lost without the prescene of the Scotland star as Mason and Livermore struggled to get hold of the game.
Adama Diomanade was causing plenty of problems with his powerful running and it was only he and Hernandez that looked the most likely to make anything happen for the Premier League struggles.
Callum O'Dowda got the Bristol City fans out of their seats, when he made his way into the box, but his corner-bound effort was blocked by Davis, who was standing strong at the back.
Ahmed Elmohamady whipped in a couple of dangerous balls from the right, as Hull began to mount the pressure and they were rewarded for their pressing moments later.
Two corners in quick succession, the second of those was swung in by Mason and lurking at the far post, Maguire was first to react, meeting the cross with a low header to give Hull the lead just before the interval.
Into the second-half, which had barely got underway and it was Hull who doubled their lead, same combination different player with Mason the provider and former Tottenham defender Dawson powering in a bullet of a header after just 68 seconds to leave the goalkeeper with no chance.
Knowing they needed to stay in the match. Bristol City introduced on-loan Chelsea star Tammy Abraham to a huge ovation and Tomlin was also brought on.
Abraham immediately injected some life into his side, showing a couple of clever touches and showing he was not afraid to shoot, with a couple of efforts that went narrowly wide of the goal.
Hernandez was still lively down the other end for the visitors and really should have got his name on the score-sheet, but after rounding the goalkeeper, could only watch as his strike was hacked clear off the line by Taylor Moore.
Tom Huddlestone came on for Mason and his composure and influence in the middle was needed, with Hull becoming slightly complacent as the clock ticked down.
Then, with only two minutes left, Tomlin struck low into the bottom corner, before Davies was forced to block Abraham's shot on the line.
