Bristol City 6-0 Bolton: Robins rout sorry Wanderers

Peter Odemwingie netted his first goal for Bristol City as they further eased their Sky Bet Championship relegation fears with a 6-0 thrashing of bottom club Bolton on Saturday afternoon.

The Stoke loanee notched his side's third goal with a brilliant left-footed finish from the edge of the box after latching onto Aaron Wilbraham's 53rd-minute flick-on.

The home side had taken the lead on three minutes when Joe Bryan's fierce left-footed shot from the left side of the box was parried by Paul Rachubka straight into the path of Aaron Wilbraham, who volleyed in from six yards.

It was 2-0 on ten minutes when Lee Tomlin got the better of Dean Moxey on City's right and drove into the area to bury a low right-footed shot past Racubka.

Moxey claimed Tomlin had been guilty of a high foot in winning the ball, but referee Chris Sarginson waved play on.

After Odemwingie had made the game safe, City piled on late pressure and were rewarded on 81 minutes when Jonathan Kodjia crossed low from the right for fellow substitute Scott Wagstaff to net with a first time shot at the near post.

There was still time for Kodjia to head home a right-wing cross from Adam Matthews on 86 minutes and Bryan to round Rachubka before shooting the sixth moments later.

Bolton failed to test City goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell until the final moments and it was a miserable start for academy boss Jimmy Phillips, placed in charge following the departure of Neil Lennon.

The Trotters could have been further behind at the break as Odemwingie hit the outside of a post from a narrow angle after taking advantage of defensive hesitation to round Rachubka.

And Wilbraham looked to have a strong penalty appeal rejected on 36 minutes when appearing to be fouled by David Wheater as he went to head home a Scott Golbourne cross.

Bolton produced some neat approach play without carrying any thrust in the final third and City were good value for their interval lead.

After Odemwingie's goal the visitors finally managed an attempt on goal, but Tom Walker's shot from 12 yards flew well over.

Tomlin was proving a real problem for Bolton and was on the end of some rough treatment. After he had been brought down on 70 minutes, referee Sarginson played advantage and substitute Luke Freeman's low shot was saved by Rachubka.

At the other end City's clean sheet was preserved by Golbourne's goal-saving tackle on Neil Danns when the Bolton substitute looked certain to score from close range.

In the end it was a rout which further edged Bolton closer to League One football next season. They are 12 points from safety with only eight games left, while City have a six-point cushion above the relegation zone.
