Brighton 0-0 Norwich: Seagulls draw another blank as dismal run continues
Match report and highlights as Neal Maupay squanders chance from the penalty spot; Norwich are now seven points from safety
Saturday 2 April 2022 20:50, UK
Brighton failed to score for the sixth time in seven Premier League matches and Neal Maupay missed a penalty as they drew 0-0 with Norwich.
Graham Potter's team registered 31 shots on goal but only tested Tim Krul four times - it's the most shots on goal a team has had in one Premier League game this season, along with Manchester City when they beat Leeds 7-0.
Both Brighton and Norwich had lost their last six league games and this was just the third ever Premier League meeting between two sides on six-or-more-game losing streaks.
Dean Smith's side dug in for a point that still leaves them in huge relegation trouble. They remain seven points from safety having played three more games than fourth-bottom Everton.
Brighton's best opportunity fell to Maupay in the first half after Sam Byram had handled in the area, but the Seagulls striker ballooned the penalty over the crossbar. Despite his goal being peppered Krul wasn't overly busy, but he did make a sensational second half save from Joel Veltman, who somehow failed to score from six yards out.

Man of the match: Alexis Mac Allister
You get the impression the Brighton midfielder could be the next Brighton player to become a top one. His development under Potter is a testament to the way Albion go about their business.
The 23-year-old started his first match for Argentina in their World Cup qualifying win over Venezuela last Friday and that experience looked to give him more authority in his performance back with his club.
Much of Brighton's dynamic play through the centre came via Mac Allister's crisp and creative passing. He was also very dangerous with his shooting, missing the target on a couple of occasions by a whisker. In total he had seven shots on goal. On another day he could have had a couple of goals. Brighton have an exciting player on their hands.
Potter: A step in the right direction
Brighton boss Graham Potter: "We're frustrated we didn't score but there were lots of positives in terms of our intention in the game. We were the dominant team and created chances. It's a step in the right direction. I thought the crowd appreciated the performance - it was a good day but a frustrating day.
"I hope he doesn't mind me saying this but better players than Neal will miss penalties. That's the game. It does show strength of character to take them and sometimes you miss them but you bounce back. Today wasn't his day but he'll have a day in him - that's for sure."
Smith: It wasn't a great game
Norwich boss Dean Smith: "When we finally put some passing moves together and showed what we could do, unfortunately on the back of two goals for his country, Milot [Rashica] puts it over the crossbar."
"It wasn't a great game, I didn't think. I thought there were an awful lot of unforced errors. We are a group of players who are good footballers, but they are making some poor decisions at the moment on the ball.
"Off the ball we showed our spirit and doggedness at times, especially our captain (Grant Hanley) and goalkeeper who I thought were excellent.
"I know Brighton have had an awful lot of ball and shots but probably 20 of them were outside the box, which is where you want the opposition shooting from."
Opta stats: Maupay woes
- Maupay has missed three of his last seven penalties in all competitions in English football after successfully converting each of his first seven.
- Brighton have taken just one point from their last seven Premier League games (D1 L6) after picking up 13 from the seven before that (W3 D4).
- Norwich's haul of 18 points after 30 Premier League games is their lowest-ever tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign, while their goal difference of -45 (18 for, 63 against) remains the second-lowest of any team at this stage of a Premier League campaign after Derby in 2007-08 (-50)
- Since promotion to the Premier League in 2017-18, Brighton have been involved in 21 goalless draws in the competition, more than any other side in that time.
- Brighton mustered 31 shots in the game, the most they have ever managed in a Premier League fixture and the most by any side in a game in the top-flight without scoring since Crystal Palace's haul of 31 without a goal against Cardiff on Boxing Day 2018.
