Bournemouth 2-3 Preston (aet): Simon Makienok shocks Cherries

Simon Makienok scored a hat-trick as Preston sprung an EFL Cup shock by beating a much-changed Bournemouth in extra time to progress to the fourth round.

Eddie Howe made 11 changes to his Cherries side and they were humbled by their Sky Bet Championship opponents as Makienok struck his first goals for Preston to seal a 3-2 win.

The Denmark international opened the scoring early on before Lewis Grabban's penalty and Dan Gosling's close-range finish looked to be enough to put the hosts through.

But Makienok headed a late equaliser to force extra time and then prodded home a winner to send the 293 visiting fans into raptures.

The likes of Jack Wilshere, Callum Wilson, Jordan Ibe and Simon Francis were nowhere to be seen in the Bournemouth squad but it is a sign of the changing times at the Vitality Stadium that the starting XI named here still cost in excess of £40million.

In fact, Preston full-back Greg Cunningham was the only survivor for either side from their respective weekend drubbings.

While Bournemouth were being thoroughly outplayed while losing 4-0 at Manchester City, Simon Grayson's men were turned over 5-0 at Brentford.

The hosts were behind early on as Makienok struck in the 11th minute after Ben Pringle's effort had been hooked off the line by Nathan Ake moments before.

The Palermo loanee saw his shot squeak past Adam Federici at the near post to open his account for the Lancashire side.

Bournemouth looked like a side showing plenty of alterations and were unable to hit back immediately but they came close to levelling just after the half-hour mark as Brad Smith's effort was well-saved by Chris Maxwell.

Howe's side were level six minutes after the break when referee Simon Hooper awarded a penalty as Max Gradel's free-kick was blocked by the stray arm of Pringle.

Grabban slotted home the resulting penalty to score his first goal since notching for Norwich in November, and Gradel almost completed the turnaround moments later as another free-kick flashed inches wide.

Maxwell was on hand to tip over Smith's deflected effort before Gosling's long-range strike flew over the bar but the former Everton and Newcastle man would not be denied soon afterwards as he was on hand to turn Grabban's low cross past the Preston stopper.

But the visitors were not finished and Makienok was again the man to produce the goods, nodding home Chris Humphrey's cross with just five minutes left on the clock.

Paul Huntington nearly won it for Preston at the start of stoppage time but his effort was kept out by Federici, with the game heading into 30 minutes of extra time.

Gradel and substitute Lys Mousset both had good shots saved by Maxwell before Makienok completed his hat-trick and sent Preston through as he cutely lofted over Federici, who could only get a palm to the ball as it looped up into the goal.
