Joshua King came off the bench to score an extra-time winner as Bournemouth beat Brighton to advance into round four of the Carabao Cup.
The teams met on Friday night as Bournemouth came from behind to pick up their first Premier League points of the season with a 2-1 win, but with a combined 19 changes from that encounter, this cup tie lacked quality.
The hosts had the best of the contest as Junior Stanislas missed the clearest chance of normal time before King struck early in extra-time to seal a 1-0 victory.
Jose Izquierdo, Brighton's club-record signing starting his first game for the club, stung the palms of Artur Boruc in the early stages before Jamie Murphy missed an easy chance to give Chris Hughton's side the lead.
Izquierdo was a constant threat for the visitors and he should have put the Seagulls in front but could only flash a shot across Boruc's goal after once again breaking clear in the Bournemouth box.
Last-ditch defending from Connor Goldson prevented Benik Afobe putting Bournemouth in front before the interval as the former Shrewsbury man scrambled the ball behind and off the toe of the striker.
Jordon Ibe had turned the Premier League meeting on its head following his introduction on Friday night and he forced debutant Tim Krul into a fingertip stop on the stroke of half-time.
It was the hosts who were back on it straight after the restart as Krul and Afobe challenged for a cross with the ball falling to Stanislas, who somehow only managed to hit the frame of the goal from point-blank range.
Brighton missed their own gilt-edged opportunity soon after as Steve Cook's weak backpass allowed Murphy to steal in only to see his shot saved by the feet of Boruc.
The game was more free-flowing after the interval and Stanislas flashed well over from 12 yards as he connected with Ibe's low cross before Lewis Cook's long-range strike saw Krul save again.
The resulting corner saw Lys Mousset's looping header cleared off the line by Murphy as Eddie Howe's side began to ramp up the pressure.
Bournemouth laid siege to the Brighton goal as the half wore on and Afobe saw a late effort saved by Krul as neither side could find the goal to avoid the tie drifting into extra-time.
It was two of Howe's substitutes who combined to finally break the deadlock as King exchanged passes with Marc Pugh before stroking past Krul nine minutes into extra-time.
Brighton threw on Davy Propper and Solly March in search of an equaliser but Bournemouth saw the time out with relative ease to book a place in Wednesday's fourth-round draw.
