Conor Hourihane delivered the ball and captain Mawson was on hand to head the Tykes level.
Barnsley dominated the second half with good chances falling to Hourihane, Mawson and top-scorer Sam Winnall.
But it was Crewe who struck an unlikely winner when Adam King's cross was deflected past Townsend in the Barnsley goal off the chest of Dalla Valle in the 79th minute.
