Gunners hit the post as Cottagers rue missed chances
Fulham's fighting spirit earned them a point against a frustrated Arsenal side who have failed to score in their last four games. The Cottagers have not won a game away all season whereas the Gunners where looking to end their goal drought - which now stretches to 360 minutes of Premier League football. The best chance of the first half fell to Robin van Persie whose header was pushed over the bar by Mark Schwarzer in the 11th minute. Moments earlier Andy Johnson had a great chance when he latched onto Bobby Zamora's flick on but the England striker dragged his effort wide of the mark. Chances went begging at either end with Russian star Andrey Arshavin seeing two of his strikes blaze over on either side of the halves. Van Persie could have opened his account deep into the second half when his glanced header struck Schwarzer's far post. The Australian shot stopper also denied Abou Diaby minutes later.Dominated
Fulham dominated the early stages and within the first minute Johnson beat Arsenal's offside trap but he fired his effort wide of the post. Fulham capitalised on a long kick from Mark Schwarzer as Bobby Zamora headed it into Johnson's path but he sent the ball wide of the right post. Earlier Clint Dempsey unlocked Arsenal's defence with a well weighted through ball which found midfielder Simon Davies but he shot over the bar. Van Persie then had his header palmed over the bar and the Dutchman had another chance to score three minutes later after a nice one-two with Carlos Vela but he fired wide. Arsenal enjoyed more of the possession in the second half and van Persie had another great chance to put the Gunners ahead but sent his free header over the bar in the 53rd minute. Six minutes later, van Persie headed a cross from Bacary Sagna that hit the left post which had beaten a flat-footed Schwarzer.Frustrated
Johnson nearly put Fulham ahead in the 67th minute when a cross deflected off his head and went wide of the target. Zamora had a few half chances, his best after making good space for himself on the edge of the box but he shot over the bar in the 79th minute. Within the last ten minutes Arsenal became increasingly frustrated and a few rash challenges from Toure and Diaby signalled their discomfort with Fulham's hard working display. The Emirates crowd were far from forgiving of their Arsenal side as the final whistle blew and another goalless draw continues to blight the efforts of Arsene Wenger's men. The draw keeps the Gunners in fifth with 46 points, but sixth-placed Everton are only trailing by two points after a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion earlier today.Arsenal | Team Statistics | Fulham |
