In depth

Verdict

Deep Winter's pedigree suggests that this ground may not be a problem and she gets the vote ahead of Ghaidaa. Backers will need to be prepared to forgive Richard Fahey's filly a poor run at Goodwood last time. The combination of the unique track and the longer trip may have been the reasons behind that run and now dropped in trip she looks worth a hefty bet. She has shot up the weights for a hat-trick of wins on ground ranging from good to firm, but if we are right about this ground she can defy this new mark of 76. Ballora has improved with each start this season, whilst Amicable Terms now looks high enough in the weights after a good year. Calaganka is interesting, but connections may have shot themselves in the foot by running well in Group company and earning a 9lb higher handicap mark. Ghaidaa was slightly disappointing last time at Goodwood and needs to improve; the form of her Listed sixth looks solid and she should not be underestimated for her canny trainer. Trumpet Lily has a 4lb rise in the weights to contend with after a fair win last time, however Deep Winter is taken to make the best of this deep ground.
