Beauchamp United showed plenty of promise on his debut at Newbury last month and has to be respected on that evidence but Gerard Butler's gelding may have to settle for a minor role behind Fire Two, who is preferred to Critic. The last mentioned has the highest rating of these and has solid claims on form but that has all been over shorter and Michael Bell's gelding is far from certain to stay the mile. Mortarboard, a son of Daylami, is interesting on his debut given his connections while Mark Johnston has introduced a couple of juvenile winners first time out of late so Galaxy King cannot be discounted. Stablemate Baileys Encore needs to improve on all known evidence and of more interest may be the Mark Tompkins-trained Gee Dee Nen, who showed improved form when stepped up to this trip at Hamilton last time and could well improve again. Howard Johnson's Verification is another to consider but the vote goes to Fire Two who has run to a consistent level, including over this trip, and is taken to gain a deserved first success.
