Hatton Flight gets a narrow vote over Tonnante, Potentiale, Bathwick Breeze and Blockley in an open contest. Hatton Flight was fancied at Redcar on his last outing in May, but failed to see out the 14-furlong trip, and is now dropped back in trip again. A son of the Derby winner Kayhasi, he is related to the likes of Pukka and Alexandrova on the dam's side, so should be capable of picking up one or two middle-distance races as time goes on. With Jamie Spencer booked to ride, the suspicion is that he will be held up off the pace today before being delivered late on, and if those tactics are adopted, a strong case can be made for him opening his account. Tonnante is a typical Sir Mark Prescott inmate, given three quiet runs over inadequate trips as a juvenile before returning over further in a handicap. He could be a blot, but we will not know that until 3:00pm. Potentiale has been runner-up on each of his last two starts, and hopefully will go well, but John Hills' Lambourn yard has been under water, so his charge may not have been able to do much work on the gallops of late. Bathwick Breeze had Potentiale four-lengths behind at Bath and is now slightly worse off at the weights, while Blockley responded well to a first-time visor when second at Catterick, and may be involved somewhere along the line. Preference is for Hatton Flight though, as he has more scope than most.
