In depth

Verdict

Cracking is taken to make a winning bow over fellow newcomers Red Expresso and Regal Rhythm, with Ten Down best of those to have raced. Richard Hannon saddles two runners here, with preference much for the debutant Cracking, a half-brother to Goodbye Girl who won as a two-year-old, and who is entered up in a couple of valuable sales races later this year. Red Expresso holds no fancy entries at this stage, but cost 70,000 euros and is sure to have been well prepared, while Regal Rhythm, like the selection, holds some big-race entries in a few months time. Ten Down was well fancied to make a winning debut at Nottingham 12 days ago, but was caught close home by the unconsidered Fred's Lad, so it is difficult to get too worked up about his chances today. The son of Royal Applause will no doubt lose his maiden tag in time, but it is always worth opposing animals of this sort. Barraland, Enodoc and Seventh Cloud all appear for the first time, and in truth the market may well be the best guide with so much untapped talent on view, but the vote goes to Cracking.
