In depth

Verdict

The market will tell us plenty in the opener and among the likelier sorts seem to be JAMESWAY with Wotitis and Merjaan on the shortlist. Richard Fahey took the Brocklesby Stakes at the weekend and as a son of sire, Camacho, we can be sure that Jamesway should be fairly far forward with his work. Bill Turner is noted for early types and he is responsible for Wotitis. His breeding on paper does not look obvious though the trainer's prolificness is. Merjaan cost 70000 guineas at the sales and is very well bred given that the dam won three times as a juvenile and was placed at listed level. Mappin Time is out of a Stravinsky mare so there should be a degree of early pace. Mick Quinlan's yard have been in decent nick so watch the market with regard to Bobby Smith. Again, there is plenty of speed on the dam's side. Pat Haslam was always a man to watch with his cheap buys and son, Ben, attempts to score with Moving Picture. A half-brother to Turbo, he has already had the unkindest cut of all. There should be a few future winners to emerge from this and Jamesway seems to have the most obvious claims this afternoon.
