Mark Johnston's two year olds often need a race or too to get fully tuned up, but there doesn't look too much to beat here tentatively we'll side with his debutant BOWMAKER, while completing the shortlist are Clear Ice and Giptar. Bowmaker doesn't have any fancy entries as yet, but is pencilled in for a couple of other maidens later in the week. He didn't cost a great deal and could turn out to be anything, but there could be clues in the market; likewise for the other newcomers Plenty O'toole and Weimarland. Clear Ice showed a liking for this track last time out when producing his best effort to date with his first placing at the seventh attempt on his Fibresand debut. The way he was finishing in that contest over the minimum trip makes the step up to six furlongs look a positive move by Dandy Nicholls. He was also entered here in the following race a nursery, but the yard must feel he's got a better chance of success in maiden company. If you'd followed all their runners here this season you'd be showing a decent level stakes profit too. Giptar steps up in trip from debut when he was slowly away and fairly green running. Ed Vaughan doesn't have a great record at the track and this is his only runner on the card. Marjolly qualifies for a mark after this, and looks suited to lowly handicaps. The ring can give us clues both positive and negative, but preference is for Bowmaker.
