In depth

Verdict

An interesting bumper with PIE AT MIDNIGHT likely to be good enough, though Hatta Stream, Be My Light and There And Then are all worth consideration. The selection should come on plenty for his Wetherby debut, when he beat all but one home on heavy ground in December. He should appreciate today's surface and the longer trip, and can improve enough to break his duck. Be My Light also has racecourse experience, having made the frame in two similar contests so far when the ground has been soft. Again, this surface should hold no fears and she will probably come on again here, though might have to settle for the frame. Hatta Stream cost 425,000 guineas as a yearling but had plummeted in value to 8,000 guineas at Newmarket's sales last October. Jeff Pearce has care of the Oasis Dream gelding, who is related to Flat winners up to 1m 4f and a market check is advised. Hughie Morrison has prepared There Or Then for his debut. His dam was a useful soft ground handicapper on the level, while she was also a half-sister to Gold Ring, who won over hurdles and had some stamina. That augurs well for today, and he looks likely to be a contender. Little else makes great appeal and Pie At Midnight is taken to score.
