        Verdict

        A humdrum start to the new year but we will offer our vote to RED TARN in the opener although Orpenella and Fifth Zak are likely to have their supporters. Bryan Smart's charge ran creditably in maiden company at the track last month and while it is of obvious concern that the wait for success is now into double figures, this is such a moderate event that connections will be disappointed if he cannot get his head infront at this stage. Orpenella has clear chances on the BHA figures. The step up in trip doesn't exactly appear ideal despite what her breeding might suggest. Fifth Zak's better efforts have obtained on this surface in the past though that really isn't saying too much. A Valley Away will make appeal once hitting handicap company. Jordi Roper was worryingly pulled up on his last visit. Martingrange Lass appears fully exposed whilst Tuxsumdoin has been busy in bumpers over the last nine months. Red Tarn looks best placed to pick up a bad race.
