Tears Of A Clown can put a smile on punters' faces, with Night Cru, Manbar, Seabow and Clear Sailing the ones that he has to beat. Tears Of A Clown caught the eye in no uncertain terms on his return from a 428-day absence at Folkestone a week ago. Asked to carry 9st 11lb on what was only his fourth career outing, and only his second on Turf, Jamie Osborne's gelding finished like the proverbial train to go down by just a head, and if suitably recovered, can run a big race in his bid to make up for lost time. Night Cru has been a model of consistency over the summer, and will have his supporters, but he does race off a career-high mark today, while Manbar in contrast is making his handicap bow after scoring easily Goodwood. He drops back in trip here, although his stamina will still come in handy up the hill. Clear Sailing blew up completely on his return from an eight-month break when last of five here in June, and in the belief that he is better than that, is another to keep in mind. He has nearly 18-lengths to make up on Brief Goodbye, but should be a lot closer to that rival this time at least. Seabow has not been seen since taking a soft-ground Nottingham maiden last October, but the fact that Godolphin keep him in training should be heeded, and he can pay to follow as the season progresses. For now though, we are happy to side with Tears Of A Clown.
