In depth

Verdict

The 2018 Melbourne Cup winner CROSS COUNTER is clear of these on today’s terms. Below par behind Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup on his comeback, Charlie Appleby’s stayer should have the measure of today’s rivals if back to his best. He finished in front of recent Listed winner Dashing Willoughby when third in last year’s Goodwood Cup while Group 3 winner Spanish Mission tries his luck over 2m for the first time with Ryan Moore doing the steering and has the beating of Withhold on collateral form. Smart handicapper Summer Moon finished third in the Ascot Stakes on his return but faces tougher opposition in this.
