In depth

Verdict

Plenty of these have chances in a competitive handicap including the reappearing Silk Fan, Roger Charlton's Colour Wheel, the unexposed Warrad and Kieren Fallon's mount King of Cashel but the vote goes to Zonus, who deserves to win a race of this nature. The selection has looked unlucky on more than one occasion this term and, while disappointing at Royal Ascot last term, is worth another chance on previous form behind Gatwick at Haydock. Peter Harris has his string in good form so lack of a recent run should not be enough to stop Silk Fan from running well, while Colour Wheel ran his best race of the season when narrowly beaten by Ettrick Water at Newmarket last month. He rates a bigger threat than Gerard Butler's Warad, who may be unexposed but needs to improve and may find this company too demanding for him at this stage in his career. King Of Cashel did nothing wrong behind Oasis Star over course and distance last time on his reappearance and has to be respected along with last time out handicap winner Distant Connection. This is a lot harder than the Windsor maiden that King's Caprice won last time and of more interest may be Newbury maiden winner Kehaar but Zonus looks well treated on his running behind Gatwick and, granted luck in running, may be the one they all have to beat.
