SURPRISE PENSION is probably capable of following up a recent win in this reasonable handicap, while Cossack Prince and Artreju look the main dangers. The John Quinn-trained selection had more than two lengths to spare over Miss Pelling when winning at Leicester over this trip last time, and the handicapper has put him up 4lbs as a result. That does not look to be too taxing in what is not a strong heat, and he will probably have enough ability to follow up. If he fails to perform then perhaps Cossack Prince will be the one to benefit. His in-form trainer drops him back to 1m 2f here after largely being kept to 1m 4f and more in recent times. Even so, pedigree suggests that he should be capable of getting closely involved here after some consistent recent efforts. Artreju has not won for over a year and did so from a 6lbs higher mark than he races off today. He hinted at a return to form last time and with conditions and trip to suit he would not be winning out of turn. Merrymadcap is 1lb higher than when putting in his best effort for some time over a mile at Goodwood. His problem looks to be stamina, as he has yet to prove he is fully effective beyond 1m 1f. Seventh Cavalry has yet to win in 13 attempts but does look well handicapped. However, a leap of faith is required if you want to lay out the cash given that he has been badly out of sorts just lately. Surprise Pension is the one for us.
