Compton Plume can follow up his Beverley win at the expense of Winthorpe, Val de Maal and Never Without Me. Compton Plume had gone off the boil a bit since his exploits earlier in the season, but bounced back to form by overhauling Torrent at Beverley last time. That was over five furlongs and the way he came late to score suggests that the longer trip today will be in his favour. Winthorpe has been knocking on the door and will surely win a handicap before the season is out, but may need to come down the weights before being considered. Vall de Maal has done well against useful enough company, while Never Without Me will find this a bit easier than when sixth to Endless Summer at Leicester. Bint Royal has a racing weight and beat a large field at Catterick, so is worthy of each-way support, but in another open race we prefer the claims of Compton Plume.
