Verdict

Hartshead is selected in the finale. Shabahar and Paraguay can give the selection the most to think about. The last named hails from a yard that have enjoyed a purple patch in recent weeks - this fellow playing his part by winning a couple of tough looking handicaps. However, he looked held off a 1lb lower mark a fortnight ago and appears to be at the ceiling of his ability. By contrast, Shabahar is on a fair mark just now and having posted an encouraging effort at Yarmouth 16 days ago, he could be a big threat to the selection. However, Hartshead is easily the best handicapped horse in the race and, assuming he can build on last week's promising effort at York, the Alan Swinbank-trained gelding rates as a solid betting proposition today.
