Red Dune and Filigree Lace are two of the more interesting runners in a fascinating opener to this marvellous meeting; the former getting the vote. The selection finished three-and-a-half lengths in front of Filigree Lace at Windsor on their penultimate starts so clearly has a little to do conceding 7lbs on a strict reading of the form but given that it was just the second outing for each filly, it would be pointless to stick rigidly to the facts and figures. At that stage of the season the selection had entries in several Group races including the Pretty Polly and the Coronation; the fact that she no longer does can be viewed in different lights; namely that she has failed to live up to expectations or - and I'm inclined to take this view - that she has taken longer to come to hand than expected. The Goodwood form is solid if not spectacular but the manner of her success indicated that she could still make her mark in Pattern company and she can take this valuable prize en-route to a step up in class. Sir Michael Stoute has won this race twice in the last four years and it is the fillies that he has won the race with that make the statistic of particular interest as both Peeress and Heaven Sent went on to make their mark in Group company. Filigree Lace isn't the biggest but she kept on bravely at Beverley, could prove to be leniently treated and the Freemason Lodge bandwagon has gathered some real momentum in recent weeks. Janina is useful but her mark reflects that and she lacks a run as does Sourire but she's bred to train on and is one to keep a close eye on in the market. Rain would make Insaaf of interest whilst there are a few likeable sorts in the line-up but the other runner of most interest is Badweia. The maiden that she won has only produced a couple of winners but the second home was backed as though defeat was out of the question (it wasn't) at the weekend from a mark of 80 but John Dunlop's filly is able to line-up here from just 78 despite winning with ease. She should handle fast ground but rain would definitely be in her favour and against the selection; however, as long as the rain misses headquarters, RED DUNE is preferred.
