Ettrick Water, Spirit of France and Irony are the three to consider in this big field, with preference for the Middleham raider, Spirit of France. Twice a winner last season, including a win over the course and distance, Ettrick Water ran well on his seasonal re-appearance at Goodwood but was a big disappointment at Royal Ascot at York. He has been given a break since and can run well at a nice price. Irony comes here in good heart. After winning at Carlisle, this grey gelding was beaten into second at Lingfield and looks set to run well again. However, the whole field has to concede weight to Spirit of France, and it may be beyond them. A winner at Hamilton, Mark Johnston¿s three-year-old ran well at Goodwood to be a close third in a 23,000 pound handicap last time. He can handle variations in the ground and can lead them home. Spirit of France gets the vote.
