Cruiser showed why his trainer rates him so highly last time but sprinting on quicker ground may be his future so he's passed over along with Formosina, who sets the standard with a rating of 113 having run the smart Temple Meads close at Newbury but his sole poor run came over today's trip. John Gosden saddles three in his bid to win this race for the second time including Lingfield maiden winner Questioning but it's COBBS QUAY who looks the pick and he earns a narrow vote. This horse was extremely coltish prior to running second on debut, travelling well in soft ground, so with the prospect of more to come and conditions fine he can get off the mark dropped in trip. Sir Reginald went well for this rider in a similar course and distance contest but like Measuring Time is more exposed than most and it may well be that the potentially smart Dominant, who was thoroughly professional in making a winning debut at Goodwood, has enough improvement in him to improve past that pair. Janood will find this easier than the National Stakes, Fury was backed as if showing plenty at home ahead of winning on debut as was State Opera who will like the ground while Factum and Auld Burns deserve a mention.
