In depth

Verdict

Some familiar names line up for the John Porter including Mubtaker, Sergeant Cecil and last week's Nottingham winner Frank Sonata but the vote has to go to Maraahel. Sir Michael Stoute's five-year-old did not run to expectations in the Dubai World Cup last time but his entry there shows the esteem in which connections hold the son of Alzao and he should be too classy for his company today. Mubtaker is a classy individual on his day and has to be of interest on his return although it remains to be seen how much ability he retains at the age of nine. Sergeant Cecil had a wonderful campaign last term but would probably want further, while Munsef needs to improve to trouble the judge but is entitled to. Frank Sonata is fit and in form but would probably want a softer surface, while Sri Diamond is likely to find this tougher than The Winter Derby that he won last time. Maraahel is the class act in the field though and with the yard's runners coming into form now he gets the vote.
