A tentative vote is given to Petitjean with Potts Of Magic and Thistlecraft two obvious dangers. Supporters of the selection will have to forgive his poor performance at Kempton and his odds on defeat over hurdles prior to that. However, if we delve a little deeper, things begin to look more positive; he's shown his best form at Wincanton, a flat right-handed track not too dissimilar to this one, and wasn't disgraced when fancied for a hugely competitive Cheltenham handicap won by Knowhere in October. He goes well fresh and doesn't look too badly handicapped. Thistlecraft has been in good form and should be suited by both the track and the company. He looks sure to run his race as does Potts Of Magic who has been a shade unlucky not to win one of his last two starts; he may ideally prefer a stiffer test. Course specialist Spring Lover can never be ruled out here and I wouldn't be too quick to dispense with the other four runners either. Randolph O'Brien is perhaps the most interesting of the quartet as he's an improved performer this term and could well progress for being stepped back up in trip. Thistlecraft looks pretty solid but there are plenty of reasons to back or ignore most of this field, we'll take a chance with Petitjean.
