Mulligatawny is gradually slipping to an attractive mark but Nick Gifford's gelding has given little sign of encouragement of late and a safer bet looks to be What A Man, who is preferred to Co Optimist. The selection is unexposed over fences after just four starts, latterly when finding Meggie's Beau five lengths too good at Leicester earlier this month, and looks to have been allotted a fair mark for his handicap debut. Flying Fortune has along absence to overcome and is probably best watched on his first outing since April 2003, while Tommy Carson has failed to reproduce the form of his course and distance success in October in three subsequent outings. The handicapper has given Commanche Jim a chance as he has Father Abraham but neither has given potential backers much sign of hope in recent spins. Of more interest may be the novice Co Optimist, who looks on a fair mark and has at least been running reasonably consistently of late. What A Man looks more progressive though and he is preferred.
