Verdict

A small field for this finale and preference is for SCARAB ahead of Sign Of The Cross and Alsadaa. Mark Johnston's Machiavellian colt has raced four times this season, and improved on his first two outings when successful on his third start at Catterick. His subsequent second to Paktolos at Kempton reads well in the context of this race and with more improvement to come, he can take this race. Alsadaa won at Ascot in September but has been beaten over hurdles since, albeit in a good race won by Sentry Duty. Sign Of The Cross has two wins to his name, the most recent of them coming at Kempton after a two month break. He must be respected today despite the tougher opposition. Aegean Prince and Sam Lord both have bits and pieces of form that would see them competitive, but consistency is not a strong point for either and so we will return to Scarab as the selection.

Alsadaa (USA) 10-1 (10-5) Tracked clear leader, closer order 5f out, led 3f out, well clear 2f out, weakened towards finish, unchallenged, won at Ascot 1m 4f amt hcp 0-80 (4) gd in Sept beating Overrule (10-8) by 3 1/2l, 17 ran.
