led, ridden, headed approaching 2f out, kept on under pressure
chased leader until 5f out, behind final 3f
held up, ridden over 2f out, ran on to take 2nd near finish
held up in rear, wide, headway from 3f out, led 2f out, ridden, headed 1f out, stayed on
close up, chased leader 5f out, weakening when short of room approaching 2f out
keen, tracked leaders on inner, led 1f out, quickened, soon in command, eased near finish, readily
Not an easy race to assess, as a number of these are better with a few hurdles in the way, but Sir Monty may have the edge on Flat speed and is selected in preference to Sgt Schultz and Quince, while Croon is an interesting one to note on his first start for his new yard. Croon has won over this course and distance in the past and shapes as if he can still pay his way in this sphere of racing. He reverts to the level on a stiff mark though and may need some assistance from the handicapper. Similar comments apply to Quince, who will have to post a career best effort this afternoon. He is not without ability but this looks a tough ask. Sgt Schultz is consistent and deserved his success here last time out. However, that came in a maiden and he needs to find a wealth of improvement to score in this company - even though he is likely to be a popular choice in the market. Therefore, we prefer to side with Sir Monty, who likes this track, goes well fresh (won on his reappearance last year) and has the assistance of one of the strongest jockeys in the weighting room today.
