In depth

Verdict

Venetian Dancer is taken to make his mark against Bachnagairn, Sir Sandicliffe and a whole host of potentially useful newcomers. No doubt there will be a future star lurking somewhere among the debutantes, many of whom hail from top southern yards, but on this occasion they may all have to give best to Venetian Dancer. Mark Wallace has a knack of churning out the odd decent juvenile, and on the evidence of his initial effort at Southwell there should be much more to come. The son of Danehill Dancer missed the break that day, but picked up well to finish fourth, later promoted a place in the stewards room, and the step up to a trip more in keeping with his breeding will help his cause enormously. Bachnagairn was putting in all his best work at the finish at Newbury, and as the dam hails from the same family as Nashwan and Unfuwain, will improve again next year. Sir Sandicliffe can boast two runs to date, one of them here, and is another that will like the extra journey. With Michael Jarvis in such good form at present, a mention should be given to Stanley George as well, although he was cheaply bought and holds no fancy entries. Sir Michael Stoute won this in 2003 with Almurad and saddles Vodafone Derby entry Ladies Best who could turn out to be smart. In what should be an informative affair, Venetian Dancer is selected.
