      Verdict

Arresting has major claims and gets the vote over Muzio Scevola and newcomer Gran Dana in the maiden. James Fanshawe has had his team busy on the Waterhall gallop in preparation for what is hoped will be a very successful season, especially now that Johnny Murtagh will be on hand to ride. The partnership can get off to the best possible start with Arresting who perhaps significantly, has been ridden in work by Murtagh's agent Ray Cochrane. The four-year-old had the misfortune to find one too good on each of his final three outings last term, including at Newbury where he was less than two lengths behind Phoenix Reach, subsequent winner of the Canadian International. He meets nothing of that calibre here and is taken to open his account before going on to make his mark in middle-distance company over the current campaign. Muzio Scevola has had just the one run so far, when second to the highly regarded Settlement Craic at Lingfield a fortnight ago. Conditions were not conducive to one so inexperienced so that has to go down as a fine debut effort and he should progress. Mark Johnston seems to have his string more forward than usual so it would be no surprise if Gran Dana were to shape well on his introduction. The son of Grand Lodge out of a Sadler's Wells mare has the breeding to rattle up a few wins over a mile and a half, but on this occasion, he and the rest should be outclassed by Arresting.
