In depth

Verdict

A fascinating handicap in which SEAMSTER is narrowly preferred to Niran and Robust Wish. Mark Johnston continues to excel with his early-season three-year-old handicappers and this son of Pivotal was a winner at Southwell last time on his handicap bow. He has just a 4lb rise for that win in a similar size field and the feeling is that he looks the best-treated of this quintet. Tiradito impressed at Lingfield in January but was then held by Cuthbert at Wolverhampton. He may still have more to give but he doesn't look that well-treated on a mark of 75. Transfixed has had a busy year but she continues to hold her form fairly well, but of more interest is Niran who was last seen finishing last in the July Stakes. This is a huge drops in class and he had won his previous two races well, but it is pure guesswork as to whether he is up to this mark of 80 and the market may be the best guide. Completing the line-up is Robust Wish who was steadily progressive in maidens, culminating in a Wolverhampton win in November. He beat the selection by five lengths but is 10lb worse off at the weights today and he was no match for one of Mark Johnston's last time out. Interesting stuff, with the nod going to Seamster.
