Southwest Star has proved himself a consistent performer throughout the winter and deserves to be one of the leading fancies. He is duly selected to come home in front over a distance that appears his optimum. Thebes is likely to head the market on the basis of two impressive performances in week company. He runs here under his mandatory penalty on this, his stiffest task to date. A worry would be his inclination to edge left during the later stages of his races. Ike Quebec is another that has been in fine form throughout the winter months. The winner of a claimer last time, has been meeting and beating exposed sorts in recent outings and has more to contend with here. The favourite Thebes could prove difficult to beat but we will oppose him with Southwest Star.
