An interesting contest where MERRQAAD is given a tentative vote to win on his debut, while fellow newcomer Manxman and the more experienced Juicy Pear are short-list material. Juicy Pear has already had three runs, two of which showed plenty of promise, and the step up to a mile today should suit. The Michael Bell-trained gelding sets the standard and is also proven on the surface, so he won't be easy to beat. Manxman represents a yard going well throughout the winter campaign and he is related to a number of classy performers from 1m to 1m 4f. It would not be a big surprise if Mark Johnston had him fit enough to win first time, but we just prefer Merrqaad. Marcus Tregoning has had few runners of late, but those he has taken to the racecourse have performed very well. This Haafhd colt cost a reasonable 60,000 guineas and he is from the family of winners from 1m up to 10f. Conditions here should suit and we hope he is straight enough to come home in front. Gems is a daughter of Haafhd herself, and she is related to winners both here and in France and the market should be watched for a clue as to her chance. Peadar Miguel and Chateau Zara are both capable of improvement, though may be better when handicapping, and Merrqaad is given the vote.
